The Official Launching of Meat Free Mondays in Quebec

(Translated by Nisha Coleman)

Many countries have already launched their own “Meat free Mondays” campaign, including the United States, England, Holland, Brazil, Finland, France, Belgium (Thursdays), and Taiwan. Quebec decided to follow suit with their own campaign aiming to raise awareness and motivate the Quebecois to replace their meat-based meals every Monday with vegetable-based meals (legumes, nuts, grains, cereals (rice, pasta, etc.), vegetables, fruits).

The major impact that meat over-consumption has on the environment, health and the well being of the animal is too often underestimated or ignored. Citizens, celebrities and organizations are working together to mobilize despite inactive government bodies.

Official Launching / Press Conference

The campaign will be officially launched during the Expo Manger Santé in Montreal (Friday March 19, 2010 at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal) and in Quebec City (Saturday, March 27 at the Centre des Congrès).

Many organizations and celebrities have already joined the coalition. Here is a preliminary list:

• Friends of the Earth Québec
• Montreal Vegetarian Association
• Équiterre
• Vegan Québec
• Georges Laraque (professional hockey player)
• Joël Legendre (actor and host)
• Jacques Languirand (radio host, writer and playwrite)
• Frédéric Back (illustrator and director of animation films)
• Julie Snyder (producer and TV host)
• Laure Waridel (eco-sociologist and co-founder of Équiterre)

The Montreal Vegetarian Association and the Friends of the Earth Quebec will hold an information kiosk promoting Meat Free Mondays at the Expo Manger Santé in Montreal from March 19 to 21 and in Quebec City March 27 and 28.

Last January 8, the film Terriens (Earthlings), produced and directed by Shaun Monson with George Laraque as narrator, had its world premier in Montreal. This event attracted a great deal of media attention and more than 600 spectators. The MVA is proud of its role in this event which help to open up the eyes of many.

Here is a glimpse of Terriens’ world premier in the media.

A great match with George Laraque against Nathalie Petrowski on the Christiane Charette show.
A one to nothing score for George!
