Speciesism: Some Definitions

Speciesism...

...is to species as racism is to race and sexism is to sex: a discrimination based on the species, almost always in favour of the human species.

...is discrimination between beings based solely on their species, almost always practised in favour of members of the human species and de-favouring non-human animals.

...is the ideology that attempts to justify the exploitation and violence towards animals.

It considers that simply belonging to another species is an argument in itself for neglecting the sensitivity and interests of the individual.

All beings capable of feeling pleasure and suffering should be considered equal. It is then a moral obligation to abstain from eating animal flesh (vegetarism), and all products of their exploitation (veganism).  – Peter Singer
